Appropriate Technology Use in Schools: Ed Tech

Devices at home and in the classroom can be a positive tool to support learning goals and foster connection. It can offer humor, foster curiosity, and has the potential to show kids worlds beyond their own. However, unhealthy digital habits have been linked to obesity, sleep problems, mental health concerns such as loneliness and depression, and even lowered test scores at school.

Understandably, schools want sophisticated and innovative teaching tools for their students and staff. However, when adopted too quickly or implemented without a clear and research-based plan, it can be used in non-additive ways and take the place of best learning practices. It can also be misused by students if not adequately supervised and restricted.

We aim to encourage thoughtful and intentional policies surrounding device use in schools to promote student well-being, safety, and academic achievement. (everyschool.org)
