GOALS
Transitioning to Recommended School Start Times
Raise Awareness among BSD Families, Educators, Administrators, and Students about the Benefits of Later School Start Times and its Positive Impact on Well-Being.
There is overwhelming evidence that shows when school starts later, students get more sleep, contributing to better physical and mental health, less substance abuse, safer driving, and improved attendance, academic performance, and graduation rates. These improvements are even more pronounced for disadvantaged students, suggesting that later school start times may be a mechanism for reducing the opportunity gap. (startschoollater.net)
Work with Boise School District PTO/PTAs to help Inform Families on the Importance of Starting School Later
(DONE!) Boise School District created a Later School Start Time Committee Dec 2024, ongoing
In December 2024, BSD formed a Later School Start Times committee with representatives from administration, transportation, athletics, principals, and parents to evaluate the feasibility of various scheduling options and identify potential barriers.
(DONE!) Secure Partnership with the University of Washington to Determine the Feasibility associated with this possible Transition
In Fall 2024, BSD commissioned UW Evans School graduate students to examine the feasibility of later school start times, with the report completed and delivered to the district in May 2025.
